Where it came from
Toriko 3D: Kaimaku Gourmet Adventure!! was produced by Toei Animation and released in 2011 as a companion piece to the larger One Piece 3D: Mugiwara Chase. This short film was designed to capitalize on the rising popularity of Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro's manga series, which had just begun its television anime adaptation. The production utilized 3D stereoscopic technology, reflecting a brief industry-wide trend in Japanese animation aimed at enhancing the immersive quality of action-oriented shonen titles.
The project was directed by Junji Shimizu, who sought to translate the exaggerated, high-energy gastronomic action of the Toriko franchise into a visually dense cinematic format. Given its short runtime, the narrative was structured as a fast-paced introductory adventure, intended to showcase the supernatural culinary landscapes and creature designs that defined the series. While it served its purpose as a promotional vehicle for the franchise, it remains a niche entry, recognized primarily by dedicated fans of Toei’s early 2010s output.
