Tottoko Hamtarou Anime Dechu!

Tottoko Hamtarou Anime Dechu! was produced by Kyokuichi Tokyo Movie and released in 2000 as a promotional OVA intended to introduce audiences to the world of Hamtaro before the subsequent television series aired. It was created to gauge interest in the hamster-focused franchise based on Ritsuko Kawai's popular manga series, establishing the playful, rhythmic storytelling style and character dynamics that would define the franchise's later massive success.

The production sought to capture the charm of Kawai's original illustrations through bright, accessible animation that appealed to younger viewers. While it served primarily as a pilot or introductory vehicle, the design choices—emphasizing the distinct personalities and expressive movements of the hamsters—were well-received by the target demographic. This short helped cement the aesthetic foundation for what would become a global cultural phenomenon in the early 2000s.
