Provenance

Where it came from

Tsuki no Sango, or The Moon Princess, originated as a short story written by Kinoko Nasu, the co-founder of the visual novel developer Type-Moon. The narrative was originally commissioned in 2010 for the magazine Saizensen as a collaborative project, blending Nasu’s distinct prose style with artwork by the illustrator Takashi Takeuchi. The story explores themes of loneliness and the passage of time through the lens of a protagonist who encounters a girl claiming to be the last survivor of a moon colony.

The 2010 short film adaptation was produced by the studio ufotable, a frequent collaborator with Type-Moon known for its meticulous attention to lighting and atmospheric digital art. This project served as a showcase for a unique production style known as the 'visual book,' which prioritizes static, high-fidelity character and background illustrations that cycle through movement to mimic the pacing of a literary reading. Upon its release, the adaptation was praised for its aesthetic commitment to the source material and its ability to translate Nasu's introspective tone into a visual medium.
