Where it came from
Tsurikichi Sanpei debuted in 1980 as a cornerstone of Nippon Animation’s commitment to adapting popular manga for a television audience. Based on the long-running fishing manga by Takao Yaguchi, the series was produced to capture the meditative yet thrilling nature of angling, a hobby that was seeing a significant surge in Japanese mainstream popularity at the time. It emerged during an era when anime studios were increasingly looking toward character-driven, slice-of-life narratives that emphasized nature, patience, and technical skill.
The series was directed by Yoshio Kuroda, who leaned into a grounded, aesthetic style that balanced the technical accuracy of fishing equipment with the whimsical spirit of the protagonist, Sanpei Mihira. The character designs maintained Yaguchi's distinctively expressive manga style, which was instrumental in the show's positive reception among both children and serious hobbyists. It is often cited as one of the most definitive examples of a specialized hobby-themed anime, valued for its ability to turn a quiet pastime into an engaging and educational weekly experience.
