Where it came from
Uchuu wa Tanoshii Festival originated as a recurring musical segment within the long-running NHK children’s program Okaasan to Issho. Produced by NHK, the segment was designed to blend colorful, surreal animation with catchy, rhythmic compositions, aiming to capture the imagination of young children while introducing them to whimsical narratives about space exploration and cosmic wonder.
The visual design features a vibrant, maximalist aesthetic characteristic of NHK’s educational content from the period, utilizing a mix of cel animation and early digital effects. It was crafted by a team of NHK’s in-house artists and composers who sought to create a sense of infectious joy. The segment was well-received by its target audience, becoming a staple of the show's musical repertoire and earning a place in the nostalgia of generations of viewers who grew up with the program's unique visual style.
