Ultraman Kids: M7.8 Sei no Yukai na Nakama

Released in 1984 by Tsuburaya Productions, Ultraman Kids: M7.8 Sei no Yukai na Nakama represents a pivotal shift for the studio, moving away from the gritty, live-action tokusatsu roots of the original Ultraman series toward an experimental, youth-oriented animation style. The project was conceived to introduce the iconic franchise to a younger demographic, transforming the giant heroes into smaller, anthropomorphized characters designed to be more relatable and friendly to children, effectively softening the franchise's image for a broader broadcast audience.

The aesthetic design drew heavily from the popular character merchandising trends of the early 1980s, prioritizing expressive, rounded character models that could be easily adapted for toys and stationery. While the experimental animation style and simplified character designs were a significant departure from the darker tone of the 1966 original, the film successfully established a new sub-brand within the Tsuburaya catalog, eventually leading to a full-length television series and cementing the Ultraman characters as perennial icons for successive generations.
