Where it came from
Released in 2022, the second season of the ULTRAMAN ONA series was produced by the acclaimed studio Production I.G in collaboration with Sola Digital Arts. This series serves as a direct sequel to the 1966 live-action tokusatsu classic, reimagined as a futuristic manga adaptation by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi. The project was conceived to modernize the legacy of the Ultra series for a global streaming audience, pivoting away from traditional practical effects toward advanced 3D computer-generated imagery.
The visual design of the series centers on the iconic, minimalist metallic armor of the titular hero, intended to evoke a more grounded, science-fiction aesthetic compared to the original suit-based portrayals. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki, the animation focused on high-fidelity motion capture to bridge the gap between traditional anime sensibilities and contemporary digital filmmaking. The season was generally well-received for its stylistic departure and its commitment to expanding the lore established by the original manga series.
