Where it came from
Umi Monogatari: Faithful Hearts was released in 2010 as a special episode serving as a direct follow-up to the television anime series Umi Monogatari, which aired in 2009. Produced by the studio ZEXCS, the project was designed to expand upon the fantasy themes of the original series, which itself was based on the popular Sanyo Bussan pachinko franchise. The narrative maintains the show's focus on the bond between the sea-dwelling protagonist, Marin, and her human counterpart, Kanon, blending lighthearted slice-of-life elements with mystical storytelling.
The animation for this production was crafted by the team at ZEXCS, who sought to refine the bright, pastel-heavy aesthetic established in the series to capture a sense of seaside wonder. Directed by Junichi Sato, known for his work on magical girl genres, the special was received as a gentle conclusion to the show's television arc. It focused on the themes of connection and faith, appealing primarily to viewers who appreciated the series' calm, character-driven pace and its departure from more intense action-oriented anime of the period.
