Marin and her sister Urin live in the sea. One day they find a ring fallen into the sea. They get out of the sea and meet a girl Kanon, the owner of the ring. Kanon tells them she doesn't want the ring anymore because it was given by her boyfriend whom she just broke up with, and she throws it into the forest. Marin thinks Kanon is still in love with him and looks for the ring with her sister. But Urin accidentally breaks a seal near a shrine...

Where it came from
Umi Monogatari, released in 2009 by studio ZEXCS, was adapted from a popular series of parlor gaming machines produced by Sanyo Bussan. The anime served as a creative expansion of the 'Sea Story' brand, which had long been a staple of the Japanese gaming industry. By moving away from the mechanics of the machine to focus on an original fantasy narrative, the studio aimed to flesh out the lore surrounding the characters Marin and Urin, who were already recognizable cultural icons in Japan.
Directed by Junichi Sato, the series was designed to be a whimsical, low-stakes adventure that emphasized atmosphere and character-driven interactions. The visual approach leaned into vibrant, fluid designs intended to evoke the underwater setting and the magical nature of the protagonists. While the show enjoyed a dedicated following among fans of the franchise and the magical girl genre, it was generally received as a niche production that successfully bridged the gap between gaming branding and traditional televised animation.
