Under World

Under World was released in 2000 as a two-part original video animation based on the manga series by Arimasa Osawa. Produced during a period when dark, psychologically dense anime was finding a dedicated niche in the home video market, the production sought to adapt the gritty and atmospheric tone of the original print work for a visual medium. It emerged during a transitional era for the industry, where studios were increasingly experimenting with serialized storytelling outside of traditional broadcast television formats.

The character designs and animation direction were handled with the intention of capturing the stark, urban noir aesthetic central to the source material. By focusing on minimalist palettes and deliberate pacing, the creative team aimed to emphasize the internal tension of the characters rather than relying on high-octane action. Upon its release, it was noted primarily by enthusiasts of seinen manga adaptations, who appreciated the project for its faithful adherence to the source's somber, investigative themes.
