Where it came from
The Undertaker character was created for the World Wrestling Federation, debuting at the 1990 Survivor Series. Developed by Mark Calaway and WWF creative staff, the persona was designed to tap into 1990s fascination with the macabre and supernatural. It stood in stark contrast to the colorful, high-energy archetypes prevalent in the industry at the time, positioning the character as an unstoppable, undead force that would define the era.
The visual design, characterized by long trench coats, wide-brimmed hats, and funeral director attire, was intended to evoke a sense of Victorian-era mourning and gothic menace. Over three decades, the persona evolved through various iterations, such as the 'Lord of Darkness' and the 'American Badass,' reflecting the shifting cultural landscape of professional wrestling. It remains one of the most recognizable and enduring character concepts in the history of sports entertainment.
