At once stylish and surreal, URAHARA depicts a strange and dystopic world where modern civilization is visually compared to rapidly-reproducing bacteria and brief moments of wonder and beauty can be found amid the chaos of urban sprawl.

Where it came from
Urahara was produced by Shirogumi and EMT Squared and released in 2017, emerging from a collaborative multimedia project involving the creative shop Crunchyroll and the retailer Park Harajuku. The series was designed to serve as a love letter to the Harajuku district, aiming to capture the vibrant, eclectic fashion culture and the intersection of traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary street style.
The animation features a distinctively bold, colorful visual style characterized by heavy line work and saturated palettes, intended to reflect the DIY spirit of Harajuku's independent boutiques. While it received attention for its experimental art direction and focus on creative expression, it remains a niche entry in the Pony Canyon catalogue, primarily remembered for its earnest attempt to document a specific urban subculture through an avant-garde lens.
