It seems that when Lum was born, a postal screwup resulted in a witchy friend of the family not getting an invitation to the celebration. The witch put a curse on Lum, that she would never be happy with her True Love.
In the present, a new Amusement Park has been built in Tomobiki, and opening day finds the whole gang sampling its pleasures. At a magic show, however, Ataru gets turned into a large pink hippo-potamus, FOR REAL!

Where it came from
Released in 1985, Urusei Yatsura: Remember My Love represents the third cinematic installment of Rumiko Takahashi’s iconic science fiction romantic comedy franchise. Produced by Studio DEEN following the series' long tenure at Studio Pierrot, the film was directed by Kazuo Yamazaki. It centers on a mysterious, time-traveling carnival that arrives in Tomobiki, leading to a narrative focused on Lum’s sudden disappearance and Ataru’s realization of his deep-seated attachment to her.
The production sought to balance the frenetic, slapstick energy of the original manga with a more polished, cinematic aesthetic suitable for the big screen. The character designs maintained the quintessential 1980s anime aesthetic, emphasizing fluidity and expressive facial features that captured the chaotic interplay between Lum and her classmates. Upon its release, the film was well-regarded by the existing fanbase for successfully translating the series’ complex character dynamics into a feature-length format while retaining the supernatural whimsy that defined the television series.
