Urusei Yatsura Movie 6: Always My Darling

Released in 1991, Urusei Yatsura: Always My Darling serves as the sixth and final theatrical film in the original anime franchise based on Rumiko Takahashi's beloved manga. Produced by Studio Madhouse, the film marked a departure from the production history of the earlier movies, which had been handled by Studio Pierrot and Studio Deen. The transition to Madhouse allowed for a distinct visual evolution, blending the classic zany energy of the series with the studio’s signature fluid animation style during the tail end of the bubble economy's peak in Japanese animation.

The film was directed and storyboarded by Katsuhisa Yamada, who sought to encapsulate the chaotic romantic tension between the protagonists, Ataru Moroboshi and Lum, on a grander scale. Departing from the surreal, dark fantasy tone of the preceding film, Beautiful Dreamer, Always My Darling returns to the series' roots in screwball romantic comedy, focusing on a high-stakes interstellar kidnapping plot. While the film received a mixed critical reception for its lighter, more conventional narrative structure compared to the experimental tone of earlier entries, it remains a significant touchstone for fans of the 1980s and 90s aesthetic of the franchise.
