Where it came from
Usagi no Matthew is a short-form animated television series produced by Kachidoki Studio, which premiered in Japan in 2018. The series focuses on the daily life and whimsical interactions of its titular character, a rabbit named Matthew. It follows the studio’s established approach to micro-animation, which emphasizes simplistic character designs and repetitive, rhythmic visual humor suitable for quick viewing segments.
The character design reflects the minimalist aesthetic favored by Kachidoki Studio for its web and television shorts, prioritizing clear, expressive line work over complex animation frames. Like many projects from the studio, the series was designed to be easily accessible to a general audience, leaning into a gentle and observational comedic tone. The series received a modest reception, fitting into the niche of late-night or interstitial short-form programming common in the Japanese broadcast market.
