URVAN is a collaborative anime between Toei Animation x Nagasaki International University. It is a cyberpunk-esque short in which shows the sights of Sasebo, a city in the Nagasaki prefecture. "URVAN" refers to the ancient Avestan word "urvan (spirit)" from the seventh century B.C., which is said to be the origin of the Japanese word "Obon" or "Urabone", a Japanese custom to honor the spirits of one's ancestors in the middle of August.
Set in Sasebo-city, Nagasaki Prefecture, this anime is a mystical and nostalgic cyberpunk action based on the motif of Obon, the festival of welcoming and sending off spirits, where the "extraordinary" and the "ordinary" intersect. The real landscape of Sasebo is transformed into a cyberpunk world, and a mysterious man and woman run through the mysterious city.

Where it came from
URVAN is a 2021 original net animation produced by Toei Animation as part of their 65th-anniversary commemorative initiatives. It was developed within the framework of the 'Toei Animation 65th Anniversary Project,' which sought to highlight the studio's technical evolution by blending traditional cel-style aesthetics with modern digital rendering techniques. The project served as a showcase for emerging creative talent within the studio, focusing on themes of urban renewal and the intersection of traditional heritage with contemporary cityscapes.
The visual direction of URVAN was heavily influenced by a desire to modernize the studio's classic house style, utilizing vibrant, high-contrast palettes and fluid character motion designed to test the capabilities of current compositing software. Upon its release, the piece was received primarily as a technical demonstration, praised by animation enthusiasts for its sleek aesthetic and the seamless integration of 3D backgrounds with 2D character animation, effectively signaling a shift in Toei's approach to short-form experimental content.
