Ushiro no Hyakutarou

Ushiro no Hyakutarou was released in 1991 as an original video animation, adapting the long-running manga series by Meiki Kajiwara that first debuted in the late 1970s. The story revolves around the titular spirit, Hyakutarou, a ghost who befriends a young boy and acts as a guardian against supernatural threats, blending elements of children's horror with heartwarming character drama. This adaptation emerged during a period of prolific OVA production in Japan, where studios frequently turned to established manga properties to fill the growing direct-to-video market.

The production sought to capture the distinct visual tone of 1970s supernatural manga while updating the aesthetic for the early 90s animation standard. The design focuses on the contrast between the eerie, spectral atmosphere of the spirit world and the mundane life of the protagonist. Upon its release, the OVA was received as a nostalgic piece for those familiar with the source material, though it remains a niche entry within the broader landscape of late 20th-century Japanese horror animation.
