Ushio and Tora (TV)

Ushio and Tora, the 2015 television series produced by Studio MAPPA and Studio VOLN, serves as a modern adaptation of Kazuhiro Fujita’s iconic 1990s dark fantasy manga. The project was initiated to celebrate the legacy of the original work, which concluded in 1996, by updating the visual aesthetic for a new generation while remaining faithful to the narrative intensity of the source material. By condensing the sprawling 33-volume manga into a focused 39-episode run, the creators aimed to capture the essence of the supernatural odyssey between the headstrong Ushio Aotsuki and the formidable tiger-demon Tora.

The character design and art direction were heavily influenced by Fujita’s distinct, high-contrast, and often visceral artistic style, which emphasizes expressive, jagged linework and dynamic action sequences. The studio sought to balance traditional hand-drawn sensibilities with modern digital techniques to preserve the gritty, folklore-inspired atmosphere that defined the original publication. Upon its release, the series was well-received by fans of classic shonen anime who appreciated the respectful homage to 90s-style storytelling, though it also gained recognition for its ability to stand independently as a complete, self-contained epic.
