It's now winter in Kamakura. When Satsuki tells her friends that she'd seen Manatsu, Ichika at first doesn't believe it. But on the day before her 15th birthday, Manatsu's mirror fragment inside Ichika's desk drawer mysteriously disappears. That evening, a young girl calling herself "Mafuyu, Manatsu's identical twin" appears before Ichika with a mischievous smirk on her face.

Where it came from
Utakata: Summer Pair of Early Winter was released in 2005 as a two-part original video animation series produced by Hal Film Maker. Directed by Keiji Gotoh with character designs by Takeshi Yoshioka, the series emerged during a period of interest in atmospheric, supernatural-tinged seinen anime. It tells the story of a high school student who encounters a mysterious girl, exploring themes of memory and fleeting summer experiences.
The production sought to balance a grounded, slice-of-life aesthetic with subtle mystical elements. Upon release, it was noted by audiences for its melancholic tone and its visual commitment to the humid, evocative atmosphere of the Japanese summer. While it remains a niche entry in the studio's catalog, it is recognized for its focused storytelling and the deliberate pace that characterizes Hal Film Maker's mid-2000s output.
