Utakoi

Utakoi, officially titled Chōyaku Hyakunin Isshu: Uta Koi, was produced by TYO Animations and aired in 2012. The series is based on the manga by Kei Sugita, which reimagines the historical poets of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu—a classic 13th-century anthology of Japanese tanka poetry—as protagonists in dramatic, often romanticized biographical narratives. By framing these ancient literary figures through a contemporary lens, the anime seeks to make the rigid structure of classical court poetry accessible and emotionally resonant for modern audiences.

The production design focuses on a stylized aesthetic that balances traditional Heian-period motifs with a vibrant, modern color palette characteristic of early 2010s josei anime. The series was directed by Kenichi Kasai, who aimed to emphasize the personal longing and human fallibility behind the formal verses. Upon its release, the show was noted for its unique approach to period drama, though critics often observed that its narrative liberties and episodic structure resulted in a mixed reception among those seeking a strictly historical adaptation versus those appreciating its creative, artistic flair.
