Vampire Princess Miyu

Vampire Princess Miyu debuted in 1988 as a four-part original video animation series produced by AIC and directed by Toshiki Hirano. The project emerged during the late eighties boom of dark fantasy and horror-themed anime, distinguishing itself through an atmospheric and melancholic tone that departed from the more action-oriented titles of the era. The narrative centers on a guardian vampire tasked with capturing escaped demons, exploring themes of isolation and the heavy burden of immortality.

The distinctive character designs were crafted by Narumi Kakinouchi, who brought a graceful, gothic sensibility to the project that became a signature of the series. Kakinouchi’s style emphasized flowing lines and elegant, ethereal aesthetics that served to soften the series' violent undercurrents. Upon its release, the OVA gained a dedicated cult following for its haunting soundtrack and unique visual identity, eventually leading to a longer television series adaptation in 1997.
