One cold winter, humanity lost its battle with the vampires, and with it, most of where they called home. A small population of survivors created a wall of light in a small town to protect them and give them a place to live in peace. Our protagonist, Momo, lives a repressed life but still wishes to coexist with the enemy, the vampires. Fine, the vampire queen, once loved humans and disappeared from the battlefield. As war rages through the humans’ town, the two have a fateful encounter. Once upon a time, humans and vampires lived in harmony in a place called Paradise. This is the story of a young girl and a vampire on a journey to find Paradise.

Where it came from
Vampire in the Garden was released in 2022 as an original net animation produced by Wit Studio. Developed as a high-concept dark fantasy project, the series aimed to explore the contrast between a crumbling, war-torn human society and a lingering vampire civilization, focusing on the unlikely bond between a human girl named Momo and a vampire queen named Fine. The production sought to distinguish itself through a stark, painterly aesthetic that moved away from the typical polished look of modern digital anime, instead opting for an impressionistic style that emphasized mood and environmental storytelling over rigid character detail.
The project was helmed by director Ryōtarō Makihara, who collaborated with character designer Tetsuya Nishio to craft a visual identity that felt both melancholic and fluid. By leaning into limited animation techniques and unconventional color palettes, the team intended to evoke the feel of a graphic novel brought to life. Upon its release on Netflix, the series was generally received as a stylistic experiment, with critics frequently highlighting its ambition and strong visual direction, even as some noted the inherent narrative limitations of its brief five-episode run.
