The rural American west is the setting for this OVA, in which a bizarre and brutal attack on a NASA base in Arizona attracts the attention of a French secret service agent, Monsieur Lassar, when a dead CIA agent is found floating on the Seine in Paris. Lassar is convinced that these two events are related, and sets out to prove it. His investigation leads him to film star Lamia Vindaw and a vampire cult that may be far more vicious and dangerous than its eccentric exterior makes it seem.

Where it came from
Vampire Wars was released as a direct-to-video original video animation (OVA) in 1990, produced by Toei Animation. Based on the light novel series by Kikuchi Hideyuki, the project emerged during a period of peak interest in high-concept dark fantasy and occult horror within the Japanese animation industry. The narrative explores a contemporary conflict between humans and a subterranean vampire society, reflecting the decade's fascination with urban gothic themes and supernatural subversion in mainstream media.
The character designs were handled by Masayuki Uchida, who sought to translate the sharp, stylized aesthetics of 1980s and 90s manga into fluid, moody animation. While the production benefited from the technical expertise of Toei’s veteran staff, the work is often noted by critics for its ambitious attempts to condense sprawling source material into a self-contained runtime, resulting in a niche but visually evocative entry in the era's extensive catalog of supernatural OVAs.
