Where it came from
Vampires was released in 2011 by Digital Works as an original video animation, fitting into a period where independent animation studios were increasingly experimenting with digital production techniques to bring niche manga and light novel adaptations to a domestic market. The project emerged during a time when short-form OVAs were a primary vehicle for testing the viability of darker, supernatural narratives before committing to full series production.
The design of the work reflects the stylistic leanings of its era, emphasizing moody atmospheric lighting and a character aesthetic that drew upon traditional gothic tropes revitalized for a modern audience. While the project received limited mainstream critical coverage due to its status as a specialized release, it remains a notable example of the studio's technical portfolio, serving as a capsule of the visual conventions favored by Digital Works at the turn of the decade.
