Where it came from
Vandread Integral was released in 2001 as a two-part original video animation series that serves as a compilation and epilogue to the original Vandread television anime. Produced by Studio GONZO, the project was intended to refine the narrative arc of the series while providing fans with a more polished experience of the show's blend of science fiction, mecha combat, and social commentary regarding gender-segregated civilizations.
The animation features the studio’s characteristic early-2000s transition into heavy digital integration and 3D computer graphics for space battles. Directed by Takeshi Mori, the project sought to maintain the visual identity established in the 2000 television run while utilizing the higher production standards afforded by the OVA format to enhance the character-focused storytelling, which centers on the uneasy alliance between the men of Tarak and the women of Mejere.
