Where it came from
Vandread Turbulence serves as an OVA spin-off to the 2000 science fiction anime series Vandread, produced by studio GONZO and released in 2002. This project was developed to expand upon the dualistic universe of Taraak and Mejere, where men and women exist in separated, warring societies. The production utilized GONZO's characteristic integration of traditional 2D animation with early-adoption 3D computer graphics to depict the intricate space battles and mechanical designs that defined the franchise.
The creative direction for Turbulence aimed to bridge the gap between the series' first and second seasons, offering character-focused vignettes that further explored the interpersonal dynamics between the diverse crew of the Nirvana. The visual style, influenced by director Takeshi Mori, leaned heavily into the studio's technical strengths of the era. It was received as a companion piece for dedicated fans, appreciated for maintaining the narrative continuity and the distinctive aesthetic established by the television run.
