Where it came from
The Video Ehon-kan Nihon Otogibanashi series was released by Studio Aubeck in 1988 as a collection of animated adaptations of traditional Japanese folktales. Designed to serve as a bridge between classic picture book storytelling and the burgeoning home video market, the project aimed to preserve cultural heritage for a younger generation through accessible, gentle visuals.
The series was produced during a period of transition for independent animation studios in Japan, which were increasingly finding footing in the direct-to-video market. The aesthetic reflects the soft, illustrative style common to educational children’s media of the late eighties, focusing on character-driven narratives that emphasize moral lessons and folklore. While it remains a niche entry in the landscape of OVA history, it is recognized for its commitment to the aesthetic conventions of the era's children's television programming.
