In the far future, the Moon and Mars have become dumping grounds for Earth’s toxic waste and criminals, and the criminal settlers on the moon have started an armed rebellion, threatening their Earthbound captors. None of that that matters much to Takashi Katori, who just wants to play computer games with his friend from America, Olivia Lawrence. Their favorite is a fighting robot game, where Takashi’s Laserion mecha can’t be beat. But when a scientific experiment causes the robot to materialize into reality, Takashi learns that he must pilot the Laserion to protect Earth from the criminals invading from space!

Where it came from
Video Warrior Laserion was produced by Toei Animation and debuted in 1984 as a unique entry in the mecha anime genre. The series emerged during a period of intense competition among robot-themed shows, distinguishing itself by incorporating a heavy emphasis on computer science and virtual reality themes, which were highly innovative for mid-eighties television. It reflects the era's growing cultural fascination with the dawn of the digital age and the potential of home computing.
The character and mecha designs were handled by industry veterans, aiming to blend traditional hero tropes with the emerging aesthetic of high-tech hardware. While the show explored complex concepts like digitized travel and computer-generated weaponry, it encountered significant challenges in finding a broad audience due to its unconventional narrative structure and the oversaturated market for robot anime at the time. Despite these hurdles, it remains a notable historical case study in early science fiction animation.
