Where it came from
Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I'm Not the Demon Lord was adapted into a television anime series by Studio Jumondou, debuting in early 2024. The story originates from a light novel series written by Satori Tanabata and illustrated by Tea, which gained traction within the popular 'otome game' isekai subgenre. The narrative focuses on Euphelia Dollkher, a protagonist who discovers she is the secret boss of a role-playing game, opting to live a quiet life rather than fulfill her predetermined villainous role, only to find her immense power level disrupts the world around her.
The animation production by Jumondou sought to balance the lighthearted comedic elements of the source material with the character-driven tropes of the genre. Directed by Minoru Yamaoka, the adaptation was designed to highlight the protagonist's deadpan personality and the absurdity of her overpowered status. Upon release, the series was received as a straightforward entry in the villainess fantasy niche, noted primarily for its subversion of classic hero-versus-villain dynamics and its emphasis on social navigation within a fantasy academic setting.
