Where it came from
Visions of Frank is a 2005 original video animation that serves as a visual adaptation of the surrealist comic strip Frank, created by the American cartoonist Jim Woodring. Produced as a collection of short segments, the animation translates Woodring's wordless, dreamlike narratives into a moving medium, maintaining the distinct, thick-lined ink style and uncanny, botanical landscapes that define the original print work.
The project was crafted to capture the rhythmic, fluid nature of Woodring's subconscious storytelling, focusing on the character Frank as he navigates a world governed by strange, often inscrutable natural laws. It was received by fans of independent comics as a faithful, atmospheric extension of the source material, celebrated for its refusal to explain its cryptic imagery, thereby preserving the unsettling and poetic quality that Woodring intended for the reader to experience firsthand.
