Where it came from
Wangu Xie Di, or Eternal Evil Emperor, is a Chinese original net animation (ONA) produced by Youku, based on a popular web novel of the same name. Released as part of the rapid expansion of the domestic Chinese animation industry, the series belongs to the xianxia and fantasy genre, which leverages high-fantasy aesthetics and martial arts cultivation themes that have dominated the digital entertainment landscape in China throughout the early 2020s.
The animation reflects the standard digital production style of Youku's in-house studio, utilizing 3D CGI to render intricate martial arts sequences and expansive supernatural landscapes. While the series is primarily designed to drive subscription engagement on the Youku platform, it follows the industry trend of adapting serialized web literature to capture established fanbases, receiving moderate reception from viewers who appreciate the faithfulness to the source material's pacing and world-building.
