Where it came from
Welcome to the Ballroom, released as a twenty-four episode anime series in 2017, serves as an adaptation of Tomo Takeuchi’s award-winning manga series. Produced by Production I.G, the series was created to capture the intricate technical movements and intense emotional stakes of competitive ballroom dancing, a subject rarely explored in the medium of anime before its publication. The studio sought to translate the manga's dynamic, elongated character designs and flowing motion into a high-energy visual experience that emphasizes the transformative power of dance for the protagonist, Tatara Fujita.
The production is noted for its stylized animation, which aims to portray the visceral physical demands and the psychological intensity of the professional circuit. Upon its release, it received praise for its ambitious attempt to visualize musicality and movement, though it also sparked discussion regarding the stylistic departure from traditional character proportions seen in other sports anime. It remains a definitive entry in the genre, recognized for its commitment to portraying the technical complexities of ballroom dance rather than focusing solely on romance.
