Why the hell are you here, Teacher!? originated as a manga series by artist Soborou, serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine starting in 2017. The premise centers on the comedic and risqué interactions between various high school teachers and their students, playing heavily into situational ecchi tropes. Its transition to an animated format was handled by Tear-Studio, a relatively small production house that sought to adapt the manga’s distinct character designs and suggestive tone for a broadcast television audience.

The 2019 television adaptation was directed by Hiraku Kaneko, a filmmaker known for his work on similar fan-service oriented titles.
