Wilds of Eldraine

Wilds of Eldraine is a 2023 expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, designed to return players to the high-fantasy, fairy-tale-inspired plane of Eldraine. The set was conceived as a thematic follow-up to the 2019 Throne of Eldraine, focusing on the aftermath of a catastrophic phyrexian invasion that left the realm in a precarious state. The design team, led by Wizards of the Coast, aimed to blend darker, Grimm-inspired folkloric aesthetics with the whimsical elements of Arthurian legend, emphasizing roles and enchantment-based mechanics.

The promotional animated trailer for the set was produced by the acclaimed Japanese animation studio, Studio Pierrot, known for their work on long-running series like Naruto and Bleach. Commissioned to visually bridge the gap between Western card game design and traditional anime storytelling, the studio utilized their signature expressive character animation to portray the whimsical and perilous nature of Eldraine. The collaboration was well-received by the player community for its polished aesthetics and successful atmospheric shift toward a more classic, storybook-influenced tone.
