Where it came from
Wise Man’s Grandchild, known in Japan as Kenja no Mago, began as a light novel series written by Tsuyoshi Yoshioka and illustrated by Seiji Kikuchi. It emerged during the height of the 'isekai' boom in the mid-2010s, utilizing the common trope of a modern-day protagonist reincarnated into a high-fantasy world, but distinguished by the protagonist's upbringing under a legendary hero, which grants him overwhelming magical power from a young age.
The 2019 television adaptation was produced by studio SILVER LINK. and directed by Masafumi Tamura. The series was designed to lean into the power-fantasy elements of the genre, focusing on the protagonist's social development and the application of his overpowered abilities within a magical academy setting. Upon release, it was noted by audiences as a quintessential example of the genre's shift toward lighthearted, wish-fulfillment narratives.
