Provenance

Where it came from

Witch Girl Meg, known in Japan as Majokko Megu-chan, debuted in 1974 as a quintessential entry in Toei Animation's long-running magical girl franchise. Produced during a transitional era for the genre, the series departed from the lighthearted, whimsical nature of its predecessors by introducing more mature themes, interpersonal drama, and a rivalry-based narrative between the protagonist, Meg, and her competitor, Non. The series served as a reflection of the evolving landscape of Japanese animation, where character development and emotional stakes began to hold equal weight alongside the central magical premise.

The character design was spearheaded by Shingo Araki, whose distinctive style became a hallmark of 1970s animation. Araki sought to balance the traditional tropes of the 'majo-ko' or little witch archetype with a more expressive, realistic aesthetic that emphasized the characters' fierce personalities. While the series was initially received as a standard entry in the Toei magical girl canon, its willingness to explore teenage anxieties and complex social dynamics earned it a dedicated following and secured its legacy as a stylistic bridge to the more sophisticated magical girl series of the late 1980s and beyond.
