In a world where everyone takes wonders like magic spells and dragons for granted, Coco is a girl with a simple dream: she wants to be a witch. But everybody knows magicians are born, not made, and Coco was not born with a gift for magic. Resigned to her un-magical life, Coco is about to give up on her dream to become a witch … until the day she meets Qifrey, a mysterious, traveling magician. After secretly seeing Qifrey perform magic in a way she’s never seen before, Coco soon learns what everybody “knows” might not be the truth, and discovers that her magical dream may not be as far away as it may seem...

Where it came from
Witch Hat Atelier is a highly anticipated animated adaptation of the acclaimed manga series written and illustrated by Kamome Shirahama. First serialized in 2016, the story follows a young girl named Coco who accidentally discovers the secrets of magic and seeks to join a world of wonder and peril. The series is celebrated for its intricate art style, which draws heavily on European fantasy aesthetics and detailed architectural illustration, aiming to capture the tactile magic inherent in Shirahama's original panel work.
The 2026 ONA adaptation is produced by the studio BUG FILMS, a relatively new production house tasked with translating Shirahama's complex visual language into motion. The project was conceived to bring the depth of the manga's world-building to a wider audience, focusing on the series' themes of mentorship and the consequences of wielding power. Because the source material is deeply visual and artistic in its composition, the production team has prioritized maintaining the integrity of the manga's unique aesthetic during its transition to screen.
