Where it came from
Wolf's Rain was produced by studio Bones and originally aired as a television series in 2003, but the concluding four episodes were released as an original video animation (OVA) in 2004. These episodes were commissioned to provide a definitive resolution to the story after the original broadcast run was truncated due to programming constraints, ensuring the director and creative team could fulfill their intended vision for the narrative.
Directed by Tensai Okamura with character designs by Toshihiro Kawamoto, the OVA maintains the series' characteristic melancholy atmosphere and painterly aesthetic. The production sought to balance the high-stakes existential themes of the show with a poignant finality, and it is generally regarded by fans as a vital, if somber, completion of the journey led by the protagonist, Kiba.
