Where it came from
Wonder Egg Priority was produced by the animation studio CloverWorks and premiered in early 2021. The series was conceptualized by screenwriter Shinji Nojima, a veteran of Japanese live-action television making his debut in the anime industry. The project emerged from a desire to explore complex psychological themes, specifically focusing on the experiences of teenage girls navigating trauma, guilt, and the pressures of modern adolescence through a surreal, dreamlike lens.
The visual aesthetic was directed by Shin Wakabayashi, who utilized vibrant color palettes and detailed character designs to contrast the fantastical elements of the 'egg world' with the stark reality of the protagonists' lives. Upon its release, the series received significant critical attention for its ambitious storytelling and technical execution, though its final episodes prompted extensive discussion regarding the difficulty of resolving such intricate narrative threads within a limited broadcast format.
