Where it came from
Wonder Momo was released in 2014 as an original net animation, serving as a modern reimagining of Namco’s 1987 arcade beat-em-up game of the same name. Produced by Graphinica, the project sought to translate the vintage aesthetic of the original title—which centered on a schoolgirl transforming into a superhero to fight aliens—into a contemporary visual format. The production aimed to leverage nostalgia while injecting the frantic, tongue-in-cheek tone characteristic of the era's digital anime releases.
The animation was directed by Yumi Kagenaka, who focused on balancing the retro charm of the source material with the high-energy, episodic nature of an ONA series. Despite the cultural significance of the original arcade cabinet in gaming history, the 2014 adaptation received a modest reception. It is viewed primarily as a niche curiosity for fans of arcade history, representing a concerted effort to preserve and refresh early video game intellectual properties for a new generation of digital viewers.
