Wonderland

Wonderland, known formally as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, was written by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll and published in 1865. The story originated from a series of improvised tales told by Dodgson to Alice Liddell and her sisters during a boating trip on the River Thames. Encouraged by Alice to write the stories down, Dodgson crafted a manuscript titled Alice's Adventures Under Ground, which he later expanded and refined for commercial publication.

The book's distinct visual character is largely defined by the original illustrations created by Sir John Tenniel. Commissioned for his work as the lead cartoonist for Punch magazine, Tenniel aimed to balance the whimsical, nonsensical nature of the text with a structured, classical drawing style. Although Tenniel initially expressed reservations about illustrating the work, his collaborative process with Dodgson resulted in iconic characterizations that have remained the definitive aesthetic standard for the work for over 150 years.
