Where it came from
Wu Geng Ji, known as The Chronicles of Wu Geng, is a prominent Chinese 3D animated series produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures and Sparkly Key Animation. It was launched in 2016 as a direct adaptation of the popular manhua series Feng Shen Ji, written by Zheng Jian He and illustrated by Deng Zhi Hui. The production emerged during a period of rapid expansion in the Chinese domestic animation industry, aimed at capturing the high-fantasy wuxia and xianxia markets with high-fidelity CGI and complex, character-driven narratives centered on the rebellion against divine authority.
The series design is heavily influenced by the visual aesthetics of contemporary Chinese gaming and fantasy cinema, prioritizing detailed textures and fluid action choreography to distinguish itself in a competitive digital landscape. Upon release, the show was well received for its technical ambition and its commitment to the source material's dark, epic tone, eventually establishing itself as one of the flagship titles for the Tencent Video animation library.
