Wuya Weishenme Shi Hei De

Wuya Weishenme Shi Hei De, or Why Are Crows Black, is a significant work in the history of Chinese animation. Produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1981, it emerged during a period of creative resurgence in Chinese filmmaking, following the end of the Cultural Revolution. The film is a classic fable-style animated short that utilizes traditional narrative structures to convey moral lessons, a hallmark of the studio's output during the late twentieth century.

The film is celebrated for its distinctive visual style, which draws heavily from traditional Chinese ink-wash painting and folk art aesthetics. Animators employed these techniques to create a meditative and fluid viewing experience, moving away from the more rigid styles seen in earlier propaganda-heavy works. Upon its release, it was well-received by domestic audiences and critics for its artistic merit and its ability to blend cultural storytelling with the technical sophistication of hand-drawn animation.
