Where it came from
The X OVA, often referred to as X: An Omen, was produced by the studio Madhouse and released in 2001 as a promotional prequel to the feature-length film and television series based on the long-running manga by CLAMP. Conceived as a stylistic introduction to the complex apocalyptic narrative of the series, the project served to showcase the studio's aesthetic direction for the impending television adaptation.
Directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, the OVA captures the signature gothic and intricate character designs that defined CLAMP’s work during the nineties. The production was intended to set a somber, cinematic tone for the broader franchise, emphasizing the internal conflicts of the protagonists within a crumbling Tokyo. While received primarily as a thematic prologue, it remains a notable example of early 2000s anime craftsmanship that bridges the gap between the film’s visual opulence and the narrative depth of the later series.
