Where it came from
The Christmas Song, commonly subtitled Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, was composed in 1945 by singer Mel Tormé and lyricist Bob Wells. The song was conceived during a stiflingly hot summer in Toluca Lake, California, as a psychological exercise to stay cool. Wells had scribbled down a list of wintry, holiday-themed imagery, and Tormé, who had been visiting his home, helped flesh out the lyrics and write the music within forty minutes.
The song was first recorded by The King Cole Trio in June 1946. While Nat King Cole initially hesitated to record it, fearing it was too sentimental, his rendition became an immediate and enduring classic. The orchestration and Cole's velvet delivery defined the sophisticated, mid-century American Christmas sound, and the track remains one of the most covered and commercially successful holiday standards in music history.
