Where it came from
Xi Avant was produced by Production I.G and released in 2011 as a promotional short film to accompany the launch of the Japanese mobile communication service Xi, operated by NTT Docomo. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who is renowned for his work on the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series, the project was designed to showcase the speed and futuristic potential of 4G LTE technology. It serves as a narrative bridge that illustrates the high-speed data connectivity of the era through a sleek, high-concept sci-fi lens.
The film centers on the character Eve, a sophisticated protagonist whose design reflects the minimalist and utilitarian aesthetic often found in Kamiyama’s directorial work. Set in a future where data synchronization is integral to survival, the visual style emphasizes fluidity and scale. Upon its debut, the short was well-received for its polished animation quality and its ability to turn a corporate advertising initiative into a compelling, standalone piece of experimental science fiction that resonated with fans of the cyberpunk genre.
