Xiao Xiongmao Xue Mujiang

Xiao Xiongmao Xue Mujiang, known in English as 'Little Panda Learns to be a Carpenter,' was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1963. Created during a period of prolific output for the studio, the film served as a didactic fable designed for a young audience, emphasizing the values of diligence, persistence, and the importance of learning a trade through structured practice.

The film employs the distinctive paper-cut animation technique that became a hallmark of the studio’s aesthetic during the mid-20th century. By utilizing intricate, articulated paper silhouettes, the animators achieved a charming, textured visual style that stood apart from the cel-animation popular in the West. It was received as a quintessential example of Chinese educational animation, praised for its clear moral messaging and the technical precision of its traditional craft.
