Xiao Bajie

Xiao Bajie, or Little Pigsy, emerged from the illustrious Shanghai Animation Film Studio during a period of intense creative output in Chinese animation. Developed to bring iconic folklore characters to a younger audience, the character draws direct inspiration from the lecherous yet comedic Zhu Bajie found in the classic literature Journey to the West. The studio aimed to recontextualize traditional mythological figures into accessible, animated adventures, utilizing the distinctive cel-animation techniques that defined the studio's golden age of the mid-20th century.

The visual design of Xiao Bajie reflects the artistic sensibilities prevalent in Shanghai during the late 1950s and early 1960s, balancing traditional Chinese ink-wash aesthetic influences with modern animation movement requirements. Artists at the studio sought to infuse the character with a charming, approachable quality that distanced him from his more complex or flawed literary origins. Upon its release, the work was well-received for its cultural preservation efforts, serving as a primary entry point for generations of children to engage with classical Chinese narratives.
