Little cats Miaomiao and Mimi are a pair of siblings with opposite personalities, one is hardworking and obedient, and the other is indulgent and lazy. When the sun comes out, mom tells them to get up, and Miaomiao rolls up but Mimi is lazy and stays in bed; when washing their faces, Mimi starts playing a game of eating soap bubbles. The family of three comes to the riverside to fish, Miaomiao sits by mom's side and focuses on fishing, but Mimi chases butterflies here and dragonflies there, and the end result is that mom and Miaomiao have a lot of fish in hand when they go home, but Mimi is empty-handed. While sitting at the dining table and waiting for fish to eat, Miaomiao and Mimi get into an argument about fishing and eating fish, mom calms them down, and the kitties understand that fishing requires focus.

Where it came from
Released in 1963 by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, Xiao Mao Diao Yu—or The Kitten Fishing—is a quintessential example of Chinese ink-wash animation. Created during a period when the studio was experimenting with traditional artistic mediums, the film served as both an educational short and a display of national cultural identity, emphasizing patience and focus through the story of two kittens who learn that persistence is necessary for success.
The film was directed by Fang Mingzhong and is widely praised for its aesthetic, which translates the fluid, expressive strokes of traditional Chinese brush painting into motion. By avoiding the rigid outlines common in Western animation of the era, the creators achieved a soft, atmospheric look that mirrored the naturalistic landscapes of classical scroll paintings. It remains a foundational work in the studio's catalog, celebrated for its marriage of moral storytelling and sophisticated visual craftsmanship.
