Where it came from
xxxHOLiC◆Kei, released in 2008, serves as the second season of the anime adaptation of the manga series created by the artist collective CLAMP. Produced by the studio Production I.G, the series was commissioned to continue the narrative of Kimihiro Watanuki, a student plagued by spirits, as he serves Yuko Ichihara in her wish-granting shop. This season sought to balance the supernatural procedural elements of the original work with the overarching mysteries regarding Yuko’s fate and Watanuki's connection to the spirit world.
The visual direction for Kei retained the distinctive, elongated aesthetic characteristic of CLAMP's character designs, translated into animation by lead character designer Kazuchika Kise. The production emphasized a stylized, moody atmosphere through the use of sharp silhouettes and high-contrast color palettes, distancing it from the typical aesthetic of contemporary shonen or seinen series. Upon its broadcast, it was well-received by fans of the franchise for its faithful translation of the source material's surrealism and emotional depth.
